FROM CONCEPT TO SCREEN

An Intensive  Workshop in the Filmmaking Process

Dr. Robert Benedetti

Led by a multiple Emmy and Peabody Award-winning producer, this workshop will explore how a film is created, from the earliest conception to final delivery, and is intended to enhance the understanding and appreciation of anyone who is interested in film.

The workshop will cover four kinds of film production: studio feature films from major studios, independently financed films, movies made for network television, and movies made for cable television. It will also touch on one-hour episodic network television and half-hour multiple-camera sitcoms and soap operas. Although there are differences in the way each of these kinds of film are made, this workshop will focus on the underlying principles and processes common to all of them.

Throughout, up-to-date examples will be used, and many terms, processes, and techniques used in film and television production will be explained. Dr. Benedetti’s recent book, From Concept to Screen, will supplement the workshop and a copy will be provided to participants.

Robert Benedetti, PhD, has had a forty-year career as a teacher, director, and producer, and is the author of six books on stage and film. He was Dean of the School of Theatre at the California Institute of the Arts and Chairman of the Acting Department at the Yale Drama School, and won three Emmys and the Peabody Award for his films for HBO.

Based on his work with actors, he has evolved a workshop on focused transaction. It uses breathing, moving, sounding, and ordinary life experiences to explore the give and take of energy, how it may be shaped by intention, how it generates personality, and finally how focused transaction can enhance our effectiveness and appreciation of the drama that we call everyday life.
